    APEnet+: high bandwidth 3D torus direct network for petaflops scale commodity clusters

    We describe herein the APElink+ board, a PCIe interconnect adapter featuring the latest advances in wire speed and interface technology plus hardware support for a RDMA programming model and experimental acceleration of GPU networking; this design allows us to build a low latency, high bandwidth PC cluster, the APEnet+ network, the new generation of our cost-effective, tens-of-thousands-scalable cluster network architecture.     High-speed data transfer with FPGAs and QSFP+ modules

    We present test results and characterization of a data transmission system based on a last generation FPGA and a commercial QSFP+ (Quad Small Form Pluggable +) module. QSFP+ standard defines a hot-pluggable transceiver available in copper or optical cable assemblies for an aggregated bandwidth of up to 40 Gbps. We implemented a complete testbench based on a commercial development card mounting an Altera Stratix IV FPGA with 24 serial transceivers at 8.5 Gbps, together with a custom mezzanine hosting three QSFP+ modules.     Deregulation of transition metals homeostasis is a key feature of cadmium toxicity in Salmonella

    Cadmium is a highly toxic metal whose presence in the environment represents a challenge for all forms of life. To improve our knowledge on cadmium toxicity, we have explored Salmonella Typhimurium responses to this metal. We have found that cadmium induces the concomitant expression of the cation efflux pump ZntA and of the high affinity zinc import system ZnuABC. This observation suggests that cadmium accumulation within the cell induces a condition of apparent zinc starvation, possibly due to the ability of this metal to compete with zinc for the metal binding site of proteins. This hypothesis is supported by the finding that strains lacking ZntA or ZnuABC are hyper-susceptible to cadmium and that the cadmium-induced growth defect of a znuABC mutant strain is largely relieved by zinc supplementation. A similar growth defect was observed for a mutant with impaired ability to acquire iron, whereas cadmium does not affect growth of a strain defective in manganese import. Cadmium also influences the expression and activity of the two cytoplasmic superoxide dismutases FeSOD and MnSOD, which are required to control cadmium-mediate oxidative stress. Exposure to cadmium causes a reduction of FeSOD activity in Salmonella wild type and the complete abrogation of its expression in the strain defective in iron import. In contrast, although MnSOD intracellular levels increase in response to cadmium, we observed discrepancies between protein levels and enzymatic activity which are suggestive of incorporation of non-catalytic metals in the active site or to cadmium-mediated inhibition of manganese import. Our results indicate that cadmium interferes with the ability of cells to manage transition metals and highlight the close interconnections between the homeostatic mechanisms regulating the intracellular levels of different metals

    Competition for zinc binding in the host-pathogen interaction

    Due to its favorable chemical properties, zinc is used as a structural or catalytic cofactor in a very large number of proteins. Despite the apparent abundance of this metal in all cell types, the intracellular pool of loosely bound zinc ions available for biological exchanges is in the picomolar range and nearly all zinc is tightly bound to proteins. In addition, to limit bacterial growth, some zinc-sequestering proteins are produced by eukaryotic hosts in response to infections. Therefore, to grow and multiply in the infected host, bacterial pathogens must produce high affinity zinc importers, such as the ZnuABC transporter which is present in most Gram-negative bacteria. Studies carried in different bacterial species have established that disruption of ZnuABC is usually associated with a remarkable loss of pathogenicity. The critical involvement of zinc in a plethora of metabolic and virulence pathways and the presence of very low number of zinc importers in most bacterial species mark zinc homeostasis as a very promising target for the development of novel antimicrobial strategies

    Developed by the APE group, APENet is a new high speed, low latency, 3-dimensional interconnect architecture optimized for PC clusters running LQCD-like numerical applications. The hardware implementation is based on a single PCI-X 133MHz network interface card hosting six indipendent bi-directional channels with a peak bandwidth of 676 MB/s each direction.     High-efficiency mixing of fine powders via sound assisted fluidized bed for metal foam production by an innovative cold gas dynamic spray deposition method

    Metal foams are an interesting class of materials with very low specific weight and unusual physical, mechanical and acoustic properties due to the porous structure (1). These materials are currently manufactured by means of several conventional processes (2), limited by the impossibility to produce foams with complex geometry. This paper deals with the study of an innovative method to produce complex shaped precursors for aluminum foams through cold gas dynamic spray deposition process (CGDS), aluminum alloy (AlSi12) and titanium-hydride (TiH2) being the metal and the blowing agent, respectively. However, the success of this approach strongly depends on the achievement of a homogenous and deep mixing between AlSi12 and TiH2 fine powders, belonging to group C of Geldart’s classification. Classical mixing methods (such as tumbling mixers, convective mixers, high-shear mixers, etc.) are suitable for large non-cohesive particles (\u3e 30µm) but not for micronic particles (3), agglomerated due to strong interparticle forces. Alternatively, new wet and dry mixing techniques have been proposed for fine particles (4), suffering from different disadvantages: additional steps of filtration/drying are needed for wet methods, whereas, dry methods generally involves the reduction of the granulometry and the damaging or contamination of the original powders. The sound assisted fluidization technology (140dB-80Hz) has been adopted in this work to overcome the technical issues of mixing cohesive powders (5), thus obtaining a mixing to the scale of the primary particles in a simple, economic, not intrusive and not destructive way (the properties and morphology of the original particles were preserved). Therefore, the mixed powders were then sprayed by means of the proposed CGDS process on a stainless steel sheet to obtain the precursor. This was then heated up in a furnace at 600°C for 10 minutes to obtain the foam. In particular, two different types of mixtures with 1 wt% and 2.5 wt% of TiH2 were investigated; moreover, air compressed as well as helium were used as CGDS carrier gas in order to ensure a higher impact velocity and a better compacting of the powders. A very efficient mixing of powders has been achieved as confirmed by SEM/EDS analysis performed on samples taken from the sound assisted fluidized bed (Fig.1a) and by the time-dependence of the mixing degree (Fig.1b). Macrographs of created porous structures (Fig.2) showed that the coupling of sound assisted fluidization and CGDS process under optimal conditions is a promising and effective technique in manufacturing aluminum precursors for metal foams.     Valproic acid and phenobarbital blood levels during the first month of treatment with the ketogenic diet.

    Objective – The aim of this study was to assess how the ketogenic diet influences the blood levels of antiepileptic drugs in the first month of treatment in a pediatric population with drug-resistant epilepsy. Methods – The plasma concentrations of antiepileptic drugs were investigated in an open study on 36 consecutive children and adolescents (20 males), aged between 6 months and 16 years (mean age 4.7 years), who were put on the ketogenic diet because of medically refractory epilepsy. The plasma levels of antiepileptic drugs were determined 30 days and immediately before the diet and on days 8, 15, 22 and 29 after the start of the diet. The daily dose of each drug was not changed during the first month of treatment, while the daily dose of benzodiazepines was reduced by up to 30% if excessive sedation or drowsiness occurred. Results – While plasma concentrations of phenobarbital did not change in the first month on the ketogenic diet (mean increase of 2.3 mg ⁄ l 1.0), valproic acid showed a slight but not significant decrease (mean decresase of 6.7 mg ⁄ l 3.2), 2 weeks after the start of the diet. Conclusions – Adjustments in the daily dose of either drug before the start of the diet do not however appear to be justified
